Early Screening & Healthy Longevity

Good health requires maintenance + screening + intervention

Introduction

Living well with excellent physical function that allows us to do the things we love, throughout our lives, is an important goal to set between a patient and their family doctor. This requires emphasizing good habits such as eating well, getting enough sleep, doing regular high-quality exercise, having a fulfilling occupation, and fostering meaningful relationships. It also requires a meticulous approach to screening for diseases that are asymptomatic in their early stages. This is most effective when undertaken within a longitudinal relationship with a proactive family doctor.

While new health gurus are attempting to brand their awareness of the advantages of early screening and intervention as a new form of medicine, family doctors focused on excellence see these changes as simply progress in their field.

Screening

A handful of chronic diseases are among the first to routinely cause significant functional decline in human lives. These include diabetes, hypertension, chronic kidney disease, and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. These conditions place a substantial burden on individuals' health and contribute to rising healthcare costs. Fortunately, they are also easy to detect with modern tests. It is imperative that individuals have a family physician who proactively ensures that their patients' screening for these (and many other conditions) is always up to date.

Cayman presents a unique opportunity for early screening. With its relatively young population we can implement the latest approaches in preventative medicine and expect to have excellent results. By embracing a 30-year time horizon for risk estimates (rather than the conventional 10-years) we can use evidence-based interventions earlier and reasonably expect improved health and functional status both now and in our latter decades.

Be sure to check out the men's health page for more information about evidence-based screening and many other men's health topics.

Intervention

Thankfully, we have some very effective treatments that can often reverse or cure chronic diseases and even some cancers when detected early. The key is early detection. If you live in Grand Cayman and want a caring, knowledgeable, and proactive family doctor, call 623-1000 to book an appointment with Dr. Kwinter or book online and specify "Comprehensive Health Check" as the appointment type.

Comprehensive Health Check

To be effective, a preventative medicine screening program must be systematic and optimized. If you are currently not enrolled in such a screening program you are at elevated risk of serious complications of preventable diseases. Book a Comprehensive Health Check with Dr. Kwinter and receive a world-class ("Executive") preventative medicine assessment. Just as important, we will follow-up to ensure that you are recalled periodically to keep your screening up-to-date.

Note that current guidelines do not endorse comprehensive population-based screening for every possible condition. A discussion with a family physician is critical so that they can learn about your history, goals, and values so that you get individualized testing.
