Insomnia

A Cascading Condition

Poor sleep results in daytime fatigue and mental fog that can have further negative effects on physical and mental health. Patients with insomnia may have difficulty falling asleep, staying asleep, waking too early, or any combination of these problems.

Insomnia has many causes. By taking a careful history and performing select investigations, we can identify triggers that are behavioural, environmental, and medical.

  • Behavioural causes of insomnia include shift work, screens in the bedroom, eating before bedtime, daytime napping, and substance abuse (including caffeine, nicotine, alcohol, cannabis, or illicit drugs).
  • Medical causes of insomnia include abnormal hormone levels, musculoskeletal issues such as restless leg syndrome, neurological conditions, obstructive sleep apnea, and chronic pain.
  • Mental health conditions that can cause insomnia include as anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, bipolar disorder, and grief.

Dr. Kwinter has extensive experience investigating and treating cases of insomnia. If you would like his assistance for this or any other matter, please book an appointment with him.
